The CAT D6 is a new 23-tonne medium crawler dozer for road builders, site-preparation contractors and pipeline crews who need one machine for bulk dozing, trench backfill and finish grading. Caterpillar builds it in six arrangements: push arm with a semi-universal blade for heavy pushing, VPAT (variable pitch angle tilt) for grading and backfilling without a rear attachment, and low ground pressure versions on 760 mm or 915 mm shoes for soft ground and landfill cover.
The fully automatic 4-speed powershift replaces the 3-speed drive of the 2014–2016 D6T; Caterpillar reports up to 20% more material moved per litre of fuel against that model. The Cat C9.3B engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V, so the machine runs on ultra-low-sulfur diesel (15 ppm sulfur or less) and needs diesel exhaust fluid — confirm both are available at your site before ordering.

The Cat C9.3B delivers 161 kW (219 hp metric) net through a 4-speed powershift with lock-up clutch that shifts up and down the whole working range without operator input. Caterpillar reports up to 20% more material moved per litre and up to 13% lower fuel burn per hour than the 2014–2016 3-speed D6T.
The engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V and Korea Stage V and has no EGR system, with a single engine ECM. It must run on ultra-low-sulfur diesel (15 ppm sulfur or less), or ULSD blended with up to 20% FAME biodiesel or up to 100% HVO/GTL renewable diesel, and it needs DEF from a 28 L tank. Check local supply of both before ordering.
Push arm with a 5.7 m³ SU blade for bulk dozing; VPAT (variable pitch angle tilt) with 4.1–4.9 m³ blades for grading, trenching and backfilling without a rear attachment; LGP versions on 760 mm or 915 mm shoes bring ground pressure down to 34–45 kPa for soft ground. Optional FirstCut edges on SU blades: Caterpillar reports up to 35% more blade payload than standard edges.
Cat Grade with Slope Assist holds a set blade position without GNSS; Steer Assist keeps straight travel on flat ground and side slopes, and Caterpillar measured up to 75% fewer steering inputs. Factory Cat Grade with 3D uses cab-roof antennas with no masts and works with Trimble, Topcon and Leica radios and base stations. In an August 2022 Caterpillar study, novice operators using Assist matched expert productivity in slot dozing.
HDXL with DuraLink uses positive pin retention; Caterpillar reports up to 20% more seal life in high-impact conditions. For sand and other high-abrasion, low-impact sites, Cat Abrasion undercarriage eliminates bushing turns, and Caterpillar cites up to 50% lower cost per hour than traditional undercarriage. Both share common structures, so the machine can be switched from one to the other. A 10-roller option is available for grading at higher speed.
Caterpillar reports up to 9% lower maintenance cost than the 2014–2016 D6T through fewer filters and service points and longer intervals. The cab air filter runs 500 hours, a reversing fan is standard to stretch time between radiator clean-outs, the HVAC unit is modular, and the cab can be removed in about 30 minutes.
