The CAT D8 is a new 39.5-tonne crawler dozer for large earthworks, dam and highway cuts, quarry stripping and mine support work where a D7 runs out of push. The long undercarriage and elevated sprocket are standard, and Caterpillar offers four arrangements: a semi-universal blade on 610 mm shoes, an LGP version on 965 mm shoes for soft ground, and two waste handler versions with landfill blades for large disposal sites.
Cat Assist functions — Traction Control, AutoCarry, Stable Blade and AutoRip for the ripper — help less experienced operators keep production up; Caterpillar measured up to 45% fewer operator inputs with Slope Assist in side-slope testing. The Cat C15 engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V and China Nonroad Stage IV, so plan for ultra-low-sulfur diesel (15 ppm sulfur or less) and a diesel exhaust fluid supply on site.

The Cat C15 delivers 271 kW (368 hp metric) net through a fully automatic 4-speed powershift with a lock-up clutch torque divider. A long undercarriage with more track behind the machine is standard, and the elevated sprocket adds penetration force for slot dozing and ripping.
The C15 meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V, Korea Stage V and China Nonroad Stage IV, with no EGR system and a single engine ECM. It must run on ultra-low-sulfur diesel (15 ppm sulfur or less), or ULSD blended with up to 20% FAME biodiesel or up to 100% HVO/GTL renewable diesel, and it needs DEF from a 33 L tank.

Traction Control, AutoCarry, Blade Load Monitor, Stable Blade, Slope Assist and Steer Assist automate blade and steering work; AutoRip automates ripper raise, lower and shank in/out. Caterpillar measured up to 45% fewer operator inputs with Slope Assist in side-slope testing on a D5. Application Profile and Operator ID store settings per job or per operator.
Cab, 254 mm touchscreen and controls are shared with the D5 to D8, so operators move between dozers without retraining. Caterpillar reports 17% better visibility than the previous D8 (21B) from the integrated ROPS. An HD rearview camera is standard, and the cab is factory-ready for Cat Command console (line-of-sight) or station (long-distance) remote operation.
The cab can be removed in about 30 minutes, and the floor opens without tools. A reversing hydraulic demand fan clears debris while working, and heavy-duty batteries give more cold-cranking power. Read/Write Remote Troubleshoot lets a technician diagnose faults remotely, and Cat Grade with 3D hardware can be fitted at the factory to avoid shop time later.
