The CAT D9 is a new 50-tonne large crawler dozer for quarries, open-pit mines, heavy construction and landfill sites: pushing blasted rock, ripping, stripping overburden and building haul roads. It is offered with semi-universal or universal blades and single-shank, deep-ripping or multi-shank rippers, on a suspended undercarriage with differential steering.

Caterpillar builds the Cat C18 engine in two emission configurations: U.S. EPA Tier 2 or Tier 3 equivalent, with no DEF system, and U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final / EU Stage V, which needs ultra-low-sulfur diesel (15 ppm sulfur or less) and diesel exhaust fluid. Confirm which configuration matches your fuel supply and local emission requirements when you request a quote. The frame, powertrain and main components are designed to be rebuilt, giving the machine a second working life at a fraction of the cost of a replacement.

Powertrain

Cat C18 with stator clutch torque converter

The 18.1 L Cat C18 drives a 3-speed planetary powershift (11 km/h top forward, 13.6 km/h top reverse) through a torque converter whose stator clutch frees the stator under low load, cutting fuel use when torque multiplication is not needed. Differential steering keeps power on both tracks while turning, so the machine holds ground speed with a full blade.

Emissions

Two emission configurations — confirm before ordering

Caterpillar builds the D9 with a U.S. EPA Tier 2 or Tier 3 equivalent C18 (337 kW net, no DEF system) or a U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final / EU Stage V C18 (328 kW net). The Tier 4 Final version needs ultra-low-sulfur diesel (15 ppm sulfur or less) and DEF from a 36 L tank. Confirm which configuration suits your site fuel supply when requesting a quote.

Undercarriage

Suspended undercarriage with 8 rollers per side

Bogie suspension lets the track follow uneven ground for more traction and less slip; Caterpillar reports up to 50% lower shock loads into the undercarriage. 610 mm extreme service shoes, 43 per side, give 4.23 m² ground contact. HDXL undercarriage with DuraLink: Caterpillar cites 20–40% longer life and 8,000-hour seal life.

13.6 m³ SU or 16.6 m³ U blade, three ripper options

Semi-universal blade 13.6 m³ (4,350 mm wide) or universal blade 16.6 m³ (4,680 mm). Single-shank ripper to 1,231 mm with 332 kN pry-out, deep-ripping shank to 1,727 mm, or a 3-pocket multi-shank ripper with 361 kN pry-out per tooth. The Dual Tilt option adjusts blade pitch so the blade can carry material rather than only push it.

Productivity

Automated Blade Assist, AutoCarry and remote operation

Optional Automated Blade Assist sets blade pitch for load, carry and spread; AutoCarry controls blade lift to hold load and limit track slip; Automatic Ripper Control adjusts ripper height to limit slip. Cat MineStar Command offers remote control for hazardous faces, and Product Link Elite reports location, operation and machine condition.

AutoLube, grouped service points, built to be rebuilt

Integrated AutoLube, fewer grease points, longer filter intervals and continuous fluid-level monitoring: Caterpillar reports up to 4% savings in maintenance and repair. Service points are grouped with ground-level access. Frame, powertrain and main components are designed for rebuild, giving a second working life at a fraction of the price of a new machine.
